REAL Program

The Richmond Emerging Aboriginal Leadership (REAL) Program is specifically designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 13 – 16 years.

Delivered in partnership with the YMCA, and with support from pathway partners, the program commences with a four-day camp that aims to support the development young Indigenous people, into community leaders.

Phase two of the program involves engagement with the Community of Excellence program, together with a return camp the following year. In addition, this program provides access to pathway partners in health, physical activity and employment, and training opportunities.

During REAL Programs, participants engage in interactive sessions that focus on the following:
 Leadership
 Active participation
 Health and wellbeing
 Personal and career pathways
 Cultural pride and affirmation

To participate in the program, secondary students are nominated by their school, and supported by their local community. The students are selected for being role models in both their school and community.

Almost 200 young Indigenous people from Victoria and Alice Springs have participated in the REAL Program to date, with positive results and feedback from both participants and schools, following completion of the program.
