A dream come true for McGhie

Life Members memories Listen to the speeches made by recent Richmond Life Membership recipients, Bruce Monteath, Robert McGhie, Kevin Morris, Paul Sproule, and Rex Hunt.

Not in his wildest dreams did Robert McGhie believe he would one day attain Life Membership at Richmond, after joining the Club when he was dumped by Footscray during the early 1970s.

Four decades on, however, McGhie stepped up to the stage in the Maurice Rioli Room at Richmond’s ME Bank Centre headquarters, to accept the Life Membership he, and 17 other Tiger premiership players, had bestowed upon them at the 2013 Annual General Meeting.

“It’s a very special day for me,” said McGhie, who played a key role in the Tigers’ back-to-back premiership triumphs of 1973-74 at centre half-back.

“I never thought I’d ever be a life member anywhere . . . only probably Pentridge.  It’s a very special occasion for all of us.

“I played with a lot of sensational players, and I’m proud of my place in this magnificent football club, and of what we did.

“What Damien (Hardwick) has got now looks pretty special.

“I hope they (the current playing group) take plenty of pride in what they do . . .”
