Richmond and VicHealth’s TeamUp have joined forces to encourage Victorians to get active and join activities that suit their lifestyle.

Around 60% of Australian adults are classified as overweight or obese and more than two-thirds of people are not getting enough exercise.

VicHealth’s TeamUp is a free smartphone app that makes it easier for people to increase their physical activity by connecting with others in their community.

Throughout the 2015 season, VicHealth’s TeamUp and Richmond will be conducting a range of activities with the aim of getting more Victorians moving, including entering a big team in the Mother’s Day Classic, organising a series of March to the ‘G events, and running a number of community training sessions.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said the club was thrilled to work with VicHealth to motivate Victorians to get active and stay active through local physical activities.

“We encourage our fans to get behind the many activities we have planned this year and to download TeamUp and connect with others,” Gale said.

"As a club, we know how important it is for people to motivate one another. Working out with a partner or a group through TeamUp is a great way to make exercise enjoyable.”

VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter thanked Richmond for their support, saying TeamUp’s association with the club would inspire people across the state to get active.

“In our busy lives, there are many barriers preventing Victorians, particularly women, from exercising – be it time, access to transport, cost, or not having someone to exercise with. VicHealth’s TeamUp app is basically a social network for getting active. It helps people find their motivation and links them with opportunities that suit their lifestyle. The app also helps address rising obesity levels in Victoria where nearly two-thirds of the population are overweight or obese. ”

Ms Rechter said regular physical activity was important for everyone.

“The health benefits go beyond physical health. Physical activity also contributes to reducing depression, stress and anxiety. Teaming up with others is a fun and social way for people to take control of their health and wellbeing and connect with like-minded people in their community.”

From organised activities like football, netball and Zumba to more recreational pursuits such as biking, walking or jogging groups, TeamUp features activities for all fitness levels and interests.

VicHealth’s TeamUp app is free, easy to navigate, and users can create their own activities at the click of a button.
