Richmond captain Trent Cotchin has spoken of the Tigers’ quest for consistency, following their decisive 79-point win against Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday night.

A week earlier, Richmond had suffered a disappointing loss to the Western Bulldogs at the MCG, which prompted considerable criticism about its approach to that Round 2 encounter.

Cotchin believes the key to the Tigers unlocking the door to consistent football is fairly straightforward.

“It’s just encouraging the fact that it doesn’t take a lot of skill to execute those sort of key performance indicators.  It’s more a mental and an attitude thing, and the challenge is just to be making sure that we show up to play hard, tough footy every week,” Cotchin said on 3AW.

“We trained that all pre-season, and we’ve shown it across the majority of games this year, but we really want to take it to a new level . . . that’s the challenge for our group.

“I think the main thing is if we aren’t playing that brand of footy as individuals, then we’ll be challenged by our teammates, but also our coaching staff.”

Cotchin responded superbly to some criticism he received in the wake of the defeat by the Bulldogs, leading the way against the Lions on Saturday night, finishing with a game-high 37 disposals, including 18 contested possessions, 12 score involvements, seven clearances, and a highly-impressive 561 metres gained.

“Obviously you want to play within the team structure as well, so there are some things you can’t control.  I’m always trying to perform at my best, but you can only do what you can on-field,” he said.

“Last night, I got my hands on the footy a little bit and was able to get the ball going forward as well.

“I think it was just a good four-quarter, consistent effort from all of our players.”
