Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has paid a glowing tribute to respected Tiger veteran Chris Newman, who announced this week that he would be retiring from league football at the end of this season.

“He’s obviously one of my favourites.  He’s been here since I started and he’s certainly set the culture of the place for what it’s become today,” Hardwick said.

“The measure of a man is to leave the place in a better state then when you came in, and I think Chris has done that.

“He’s been an incredible player, but an incredible leader also for this footy club, and he’s handed that over to Trent (Cotchin) now, which is really important.

“Our players really enjoy playing with Chris.  He’s an important cog in the Richmond team.

“I don’t think there’s been a better influence around the footy club since I’ve been here . . .”
