Dan Butler produced one of the most impressive debut displays by a Tiger cub in recent years against Carlton in last Thursday night’s 2017 season-opener at the MCG.

The 20-year-old, speedy, skilful small forward played an influential role in Richmond’s 43-point victory over the Blues, picking up 19 disposals, including five inside-50s and two goals.

With his composure, creativity and pace, he was a constant threat in the Tigers’ attack.

And, having waited two years to make his senior debut for Richmond, it’s no wonder he was thrilled with what unfolded under the MCG lights last Thursday night, in front of a big crowd of 73,137.

“It was a pretty unbelievable experience,” Butler told ‘foxfooty.com.au’ post-match.

“I had a pretty solid pre-season, but I still wasn’t 100 per cent sure whether I was going to play or not.

“I got told at Sunday training. ‘Dimma’ (coach Damien Hardwick) brought everyone in and told me, and the boys went crazy. It was pretty exciting.”

Butler formed a potent partnership with fellow young, Tiger small forwards Daniel Rioli and Jason Castagna, who both also kicked two goals.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Butler said.

“We’ve added a bit of speed, which is exciting.

“We just love being out there, putting on pressure, and trying to get on the end of a few.”
