Richmond’s increased midfield depth is a key factor in the team’s success, according to clever Tiger playmaker Shane Edwards.

The Tigers were able to convincingly defeat Melbourne in the big Round 5 Anzac Eve clash at the MCG last night without their two best midfielders, captain Trent Cotchin and reigning Brownlow Medallist Dustin Martin, dominating, albeit they were still extremely valuable contributors throughout the match.

“We don’t really want to rely on Dustin and ‘Cotch’ like we probably have in the past, and it’s up to the other guys,” Edwards said on SEN.

“Like Reece Conca’s really stepped up this year now he’s over his injuries, and Kane Lambert, he’s always doing really well for us . . .

“We want everyone to go through the midfield and have an impact, therefore we don’t rely on too many blokes.

Edwards was one of the best players for Richmond in the 46-point victory over the Demons.

Playing a versatile role as a half-forward, on the wing and through the midfield, he finished with 26 disposals, including 13 contested possessions, five clearances, five inside-50s, five intercepts, three goal assists, eight score involvements and 414 metres gained.

In typical style, he provided teammates with numerous opportunities through his creative play.

Also, in typical style, he shunned the limelight during his post-match interview on SEN, preferring to focus on the team aspects.

“The rest of us, apart from ‘Dusty’ and ‘Cotch’, have really got to step up and play our role when we’re in there (the midfield),” he said.

“We can’t just go in there and make up the numbers.

“We’ve got to make sure we put our pressure on . . .

“A lot of our possessions come from the defensive side of the game. So, if we’re doing that, often the ball falls our way.”
