Emerging Richmond midfielder Matt McDonough believes he is ready to make an impact the next time he gets an opportunity at senior level.

The 21-year-old, who is halfway through his third season at Tigerland, had been one of the Tigers’ most consistent players at VFL level in 2015.

His strong form was rewarded with a senior appearance in Round 4 against Melbourne – the ninth of his career.

He was named as the substitute, and was solid with seven disposals and three tackles in limited game time, but Richmond suffered a disappointing loss, and he was omitted the following week.

“It’s always exciting having a go in the senior team.  It was disappointing it was only for a half,” McDonough told Roar Vision.

“It was a pretty tough day against Melbourne, so it was hard to make a real impact.

“I’ve just got to keep battling away in the VFL, and hopefully I get an opportunity soon.

“The overall goal is to get back into the senior side, and make an impact.

“I’m confident if I got the opportunity, that I’d make it my own.  I’ve just got to put a few good VFL games together.

“It’s about consistency, and waiting for my opportunity.  I’d love to be able to get in there and show what I can do, and help the team.

McDonough has been trialed in a number of positions over the last few seasons, but has felt more comfortable in recent times as an inside midfielder who can pinch-hit in the forward line.

He has been working hard on the training track to be a more rounded player, complimenting his impressive clearance work with a sound outside game.

“I’ve showed some good signs, and I’ve had a couple of disappointing games, but overall it’s been an improvement on last year,” he said.
