Richmond’s first pick (No. 7 overall) in today’s 2013 AFL rookie draft has been used on former Melbourne forward Ricky Petterd.

The 185cm, 85kg, 24-year-old was delisted by the Demons at the end of the 2012 season after a 54-game career that netted him 55 goals.

Petterd, who made his senior league debut in 2007 after being recruited from Queensland club Broadbeach (pick 30 overall in the 2006 National Draft), averaged 13.7 disposals per game in his time at Melbourne.

He received an AFL Rising Star nomination in his ’07 debut season and, in just his ninth game (against Carlton), suffered a potentially life-threatening collapsed lung, after copping a heavy knock, which resulted in him being hospitalised for more than a week.

During the 2012 season, Petterd was hampered by a nagging Achilles injury that restricted to just four senior appearances.

At his peak, Petterd is a dangerous proposition up forward due to his mobility, creativity, and aerial ability.
