Skilful, speedy small forward Dan Butler has provided an insight into the brilliant, team-lifting, running goal he kicked in Richmond’s 13-point win against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval last Saturday night.

Late in the second quarter, with Richmond trailing by 10 points in a tight, low-scoring battle, Butler received a handball from Tiger defender Dylan Grimes on the defensive side of the centre circle.

The 21-year-old put the afterburners on, burst away, took two bounces, evaded a lunging Port opponent, steadied, and then slotted it through from inside the Tigers’ forward-50 for a sizzling six-pointer that, not surprisingly, is one of the three Round 15 nomination for the AFL Goal of the Year.

“When I got the ball there I didn’t really expect to run all that way,” Butler told 3AW.

“The coaches all back me in to use my pace . . .

“We all want to play to our strengths, so that’s what I just try to do.

“It just opened up . . . I saw an opportunity and kept going, and was lucky enough to kick it.”
