Six games, 38 kicks, 20 goals, six wins, one premiership . . .

Therein lies the tale of Richmond forward Jacob Townsend’s remarkable rise to prominence in the AFL competition.

First-up from a spell, after capturing the imagination of the Yellow and Black faithful late last season with his goalkicking exploits, Townsend again maximised his opportunities superbly for the Tigers in the 2018 season-opener against Carlton.

It was a now trademark Townsend display – four goals from his six kicks, as well as plenty of fierce pressure applied to the opposition defenders.

And, every time he had a set shot for goal, you just knew he was going to steer it through the upright perpendiculars, such is his good goalkicking technique plus high levels of confidence these days.

“He’s pretty deadeye in front of the big sticks,” Richmond captain Trent Cotchin told Channel Seven following the 26-point victory over the Blues.

“Another guy who just plays his role . . .

“The value he brings to our football team, and the way he competes, is second to none, I think.

“Hence the reward he got at the end of last year, but also the form that he’s started the season in.”
