Throughout 2025, we are transporting Richmond supporters back 60 years to what was a pivotal season in the Club’s history – 1965. In today’s flashback, we look at The Age newspaper’s review of the Tigers’ Round 2 match of the ’65 season against Collingwood at Victoria Park.
Two great goals by Collingwood’s Terry Waters in the final term clinched victory for the Magpies over Richmond at Victoria Park.
Collingwood won by 15 points, but until Waters’ goals – both will long punt kicks – Richmond was right in the fight.
At one stage in the second quarter Richmond had a lead of 21 points and looked to be playing with all the dash and fire of a winning side.
After the interval, however, Collingwood swung into action and in the last two quarters kicked 7.3 to Richmond’s 2.4.
The Tigers led for most of the match despite an almost complete breakdown in front of goal.
Recruit full-forward Barry Richardson was no match for Ted Potter – he was finally shifted to a forward flank – and back pocket player Reeves was a safe defender for the Magpies.
Bill Barrot, in the centre, gave Richmond’s attack plenty of chances and early in the game centre half-forward Ross Warner was not slow to carry on the good work.
John Sheahan and Don Davenport on the forward flanks were also active – but too often they frittered away scoring chances.
Richmond captain Neville Crowe dominated the ruck – he was easily the best player afield – but Collingwood’s small men, Norman, Hutchesson and Chapman were in control around the packs.
And on the forward line Des Tuddenham’s skill and weight were never checked.
Full-forward Ian Graham was not a match winner, but he made things difficult for Fred Swift and his two goals came when they were desperately needed.
Overall Collingwood won because it failed to accept defeat, even when well down.
Richmond, although on the receiving end of some puzzling decisions by umpire Jim Brewer, had its chances, but its poor attack counted against it.
