AFLW is being played in Mildura for the first time this weekend and North West Victorian local Tessa Lavey can't wait.

The Tigers take on GWS at the Mildura Sporting Precinct from 3.10pm this Sunday, with the clash broadcast live on 7mate, Kayo, Fox Footy and the AFL Women's app.

Lavey, born and bred in Swan Hill, said the Tigers are "pumped" to be heading to the region.

"We're really looking forward to the challenge. GWS has been playing really well and so have we, so I think it'll be a good match of footy in Mildura," Lavey said on ABC Mildura-Swan Hill on Thursday morning.

"I'm excited. I'm from down the road in Swan Hill, so I'm going to have some family coming up to watch. I think everyone's really excited to get down... Hopefully a lot of people turn out with their scarves and banners, it'll be cool.

"This is the first time I've played regional so it's really exciting for me and the team."

Lavey said playing consistent football would be a key focus this against the Giants, with Richmond coming off the back of six wins in a row.

"We started slowly last week against Carlton, so we need to start with a bit of pep in our step and play four quarters, so that's one of our main focuses coming into Mildura," Lavey said.

"We've only had one road trip so far this year to play West Coast so we don't always get to travel together.

"It's nice to get away and do some team bonding."

The 29-year-old Olympic basketballer is looking forward to connecting with the Mildura community across the weekend.

"We're really keen to get some fans down and we'll be sticking around to say hi and then see them again on the Sunday," Lavey said.

"I wish as a kid that we had a women's league to look up to, and now I'm in the AFLW system and being able to travel regionally.

"I'm pumped to get down there and see all the little girls and boys down there who we can inspire."
