There’s a potent look about Richmond’s tall forward combination of Jack Riewoldt and Ben Griffiths in the early stages of season 2015.

They have kicked 16 goals between them (Riewoldt 10, Griffiths six) three rounds into the season, which is the most by any pair of tall forwards in the competition so far.

Richmond and Melbourne will play in the first Anzac Day eve match this Friday night at the MCG

Griffiths, who kicked two goals in an impressive performance for Richmond in its win against Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday night, outlined the growing understanding he has with Riewoldt up forward, which is leading to enhanced scoreboard pressure for the Tigers.

“It just comes with playing together consistently and getting an understanding of each other’s game . . . knowing when to lead out of space and sacrifice it, or when it’s your time to go,” Griffiths said on the ABC.

“I think it just comes naturally, I suppose, as we’ve played more football together.

“I try and back myself off that being that long, down-the-line get-out kick . . . the natural instinct is just to go for the ball, but so much these days it’s about unrewarded running and just creating space for others and then trying to get into back space.

“So it’s just about knowing your role and playing it.”
