Emerging utility Jason Castagna provides ‘Roar Vision’ with an assessment of his debut AFL season...

Arriving at Richmond

“I just wanted to get some games this year, make my debut and play a couple of good games and try and hold my spot. Playing on the wing, half-forward, half-back, I played a bit of everywhere. My strength’s probably my speed and ability to get the ball, so I want to keep winning the ball and hopefully be able to use it a bit better and work on my kicking more.”

Making his debut

“I was actually an emergency and got the late call up, which was good because I didn’t have to sleep on it, I just woke up in the morning and found out I was playing. I was pretty relaxed until I got there then got a bit nervous. It was pretty unreal walking out; I took in the crowd in the warm-up then just played when I was out there.”

First AFL goal

“I just grabbed the ball and chucked it on the boot and it happened to swing in which was good. To get on the scoreboard and actually have a bit of an impact on the game was good and I felt a bit more a part of it… I also had a bit more time through the midfield which helped to find the ball.”

Key influence

“Steve Morris has been consistently good with me, whether it’s work for when I was down back or some extra touch and some kicking - so he’s been great, he’s been a real standout.”

Taking the next step

“I think I’m reasonably fit but I want to get to that next level and really be one of the fitter players here and just work on my strength as well and my skills over the break.”
