The memory of Richmond Immortal, Jack Dyer, famously known as ‘Captain Blood’ has been honoured with the naming of a new street and retail precinct located in Richmond, just moments from his beloved Tigerland.

Dyer played 312 games from 1931-49, he is a Richmond Football Club Immortal, Life Member, two-time premiership player, six-time best and fairest medallist, former coach, captain of Richmond’s Team of the Century, inaugural member of the AFL’s Team of the Century and Hall of Fame, as well as an Order of Australia Medallist.

The new street, located in the new Jaques precinct in the heart of Richmond was unveiled today in front of Dyer’s family, Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale, City of Yarra Councillors, and members of the Jack Dyer Tribute Campaign, who successfully lobbied the local council to honour Dyer with the street.

More than just a football legend, Jack Dyer was very much part of the social fabric of the Richmond community. He was a local policeman, florist and owner of a Milk Bar in Church Street, Richmond.

In 2014, the Jack Dyer Tribute Campaign was launched by a group of residents calling on the City Of Yarra to recognise the football identity as a hero of the community by naming a street after him.

Richmond CEO, Brendon Gale paid tribute to the courageous Captain Blood at the unveiling of Dyer Street in Richmond earlier today.

“For our Club, we’ve had many great teams and many great players throughout our rich history, and arguably Jack’s the greatest,” he said.

“For him to be honoured in this way, I think is a terrific legacy for his family and the Club.

“We’re proud to call Jack one of our own, he was a strong, tough, courageous footballer, and after a lot of campaigning and commitment from local residents, we can enjoy this new piece of history - a Club Immortal honoured with a new street.”

Dyer’s son, Jack Junior was also present today to reflect on his father’s life and legacy.

"Dad would be humbled and proud that his name is etched in the heart of the Richmond Community of which he served and loved for many years. The Dyer family would like thank all involved for adding to his legacy.”

Located within the Jaques precinct, developed jointly by the Riverlee Group and Macquarie Real Estate Equity Funds, Dyer Street at Jaques is a newly completed retail laneway featuring a large new restaurant and three other retailers.

Dyer Street is bordered by Palmer, Coppin, and Griffiths Streets and also features 377 apartments and townhouses.
