When Greg Dear left Hawthorn and joined Richmond at the end of the 1993 season, traded for pick 23 in the National Draft, there were many football critics wondering what he had left in his battle-worn, lanky frame to offer the Tigers, apart from extensive experience.

Dear had been a member of three premiership sides with the Hawks, and provided them with excellent service over a decade, in his ruck role.

A serious knee injury in 1991, however, had prevented him from seeing any senior action that season and, although he subsequently regained his place in the Hawthorn side, by the end of 1993 his time was up at Glenferrie.

The Hawks agreed to release the veteran ruckman to Richmond, in exchange for pick 23 in the National Draft.

Those who doubted the wisdom of the Tigers throwing a lifeline to the then 30-year-old, were quickly forced to have a rethink.

Dear had an instant impact at Tigerland due to his skillful ruckwork, vast football experience, knowhow and leadership qualities.

His palming of the ball in ruck contests at centre bounces and stoppages, coupled with his creative play around the ground (clever handballs, tap-ons, etc.), ensured a regular supply of leather to his new Tiger teammates.

With a sudden strong ruck influence, Richmond’s fortunes took a decent turn for the better . . .

After finishing second last (14th) in 1993, with just four wins, the Tigers rose to ninth in 1994, with 12 wins, missing a final eight berth on percentage - and the role played by Greg Dear, in that significant rise, was crucial.

Dear played all 22 games in his debut season for Richmond, and 23 of the 25 in 1995, as the Tigers made the finals for the first time since 1982.

Injuries finally caught up with Dear in 1996, forcing him into retirement.

Although his stay at Tigerland had been relatively brief, those who played alongside him, during that time, are glowing in their praise of the man they affectionately refer to as “granddad”.
