Port Adelaide paid Richmond newcomer Anthony Miles the ultimate compliment in last Sunday’s Round 17 clash at Etihad Stadium.

The Power shifted its esteemed experienced tagger Kane Cornes on to Miles after the young Tiger ‘ball-magnet’ midfielder had racked up 10 disposals in the opening quarter.

But not even the wily Port veteran could stop Miles continuing to exert a major influence on the contest.

By game’s end, Miles had 28 disposals, including 13 contested possessions, a team-high eight clearances, five centre clearances and six inside-50s to his credit.

“Cornes came to me at the stoppages and tried to get off me.  I have never had someone go with me at AFL level, and it was a learning curve,” Miles told the ‘Herald Sun’.

“I have huge amounts of respect for him, spending a couple of years with his brother Chad in Sydney.”

In six senior appearances with the Tigers, Miles is averaging 26 disposals per match, with 11.4 of them being contested possessions.  He also averages 6.5 clearances and five tackles.

“He’s an incredible competitor,” said Richmond’s coach Damien Hardwick.

“You’ve got to love those guys that continually surprise you at every level.  He’s done it all his career.

“The ability to win the hard ball can never be underestimated . . . That’s what he does really well, and he uses it well.

“He just keeps getting it done.

“He’s been really impressive for us, he’s an outstanding character, and we’re really pleased to have him.”
