Richmond’s development coach Mark ‘Choco’ Williams provides an interesting insight into the progress of talented, second-year Tiger Connor Menadue.

“Connor got a couple of games last year.  I remember a big, long goal (he kicked) against Port Adelaide . . .

“He showed that he can play, but he was probably inconsistent and spasmodic.

“I’ve seen him mature over the pre-season.  He’s become much more responsible and professional with his preparation.

“Out on the track, you see him getting the ball a lot more.

“I think he understands the game.  He actually shares the game plan with the other younger players and helps them out.

“All of those attributes will lead him to get more of the ball.

“He has great chase-down and running ability, both long-distance and sprinting.

“With him opening up the play, it’s all good for our forwards . . . It pulls the opposition out of play and, at the same time, when they’ve got the ball, he can chase them down and tackle, which is vital in his role.

“He’s been working on getting contested ball, and that’s important for all young players.

“I think it’s a matter of him understanding exactly how the wing role works.  Kamdyn McIntosh, at this time last year, was probably similar . . . We gave him an opportunity and he really flourished.

“Connor’s going to have to force someone out of the side.  It’s not like he’s just a walk-up start.

“But if someone got injured, or it was line-ball, he’s a fair chance to play, straight-up because he’s got great attributes.

“We’re going to be a fast side and we’re going to keep looking to play faster players . . .”
