Richmond coach Damien Hardwick is convinced recently re-signed, star Tiger key defender Alex Rance has the capacity to take his game to an even higher level.

Rance, who the Club announced over the weekend had recommitted for a further four years, has developed into one of the elite backmen of the competition, earning All-Australian selection for the first time in 2014.

Hardwick feels the talented, tough 25-year-old has significant scope for more improvement.

“How good he can become is really up to Alex and the development he can see in himself, because he’s got the ability to improve once again,” Hardwick said on the ABC.

“He’s not only a great full-back, but he’s certainly got the capability of getting 20-25 touches as a full-back also, much like a Matthew Scarlett (former Geelong full-back), who’s a genuine champion of the game.

“The thing he needs to do to cap off that probably elite status, is start to take Richmond Football Club up the ladder and play in significant finals campaigns.

“That’s what makes the mark of a player, in my opinion.”
