Maurice Rioli

Richmond small forward Maurice Rioli’s reputation for applying intense pressure to opposition players is renowned, but he is now starting to add offensive weaponry to his game.

This was clearly highlighted in the Round 4 clash with Port Adelaide at the MCG, when Rioli ignited a Tigers revival late in the second quarter of the contest.

Rioli rocketed skywards to take a spectacular mark in the goal-square at the Ponsford end of the ground and subsequently slotted through what was Richmond’s first goal.

Two further goals quickly followed for the Tigers on the back of Rioli’s inspirational individual effort.

The 23-year-old, playing his 53rd AFL game, had relatively modest statistical numbers – 10 disposals, six contested possessions, two marks, one goal and five score involvements, but his impact on the contest was considerably more significant, as Richmond coach Adem Yze explained during his post-match press conference.

“I’ve mentioned this before with Maurice, we know what he can do without the footy...he’s starting to get some real bang for buck with the ball,” Yze said.

“He’s highly talented and now he’s starting to execute with the footy.

“Once again, a few chase-down tackles, and that lifts the spirit of the team.

“If he starts doing that with the footy and aerial contests, it’s just going to round out his game.”
