Dylan Grimes and Alex Rance following the 2019 Grand Final at the MCG.

Former Richmond star key defender Alex Rance has paid a glowing tribute to the player who replaced him as general of the Tigers’ backline, Dylan Grimes.

Rance, a five-time All-Australian representative and 2017 Richmond premiership hero, sang Dylan’s praises in a post-game interview on Channel Seven following Grimes’ 200-game milestone against Port Adelaide at the MCG last Thursday night.

“I can’t say enough about this guy from a professional standpoint,” Rance said.

“Many hamstrings (injuries) . . . came from playing VFL reserves. We actually played VFL reserves together.

“So, 200 games, Best and Fairest . . .  Obviously, his professional standing takes care of itself, but just an amazing human to boot.

Rance also provided an insight into what makes Grimes such a top teammate at Tigerland.

“I think the balance he provides,” Rance said.

“He knows when to have a laugh and lighten the mood out there . . .

“He also has that really good concentration of when to nail down and buckle down.

“I guess that’s why he’s one of the fantastic leaders of the Richmond Football Club. He knows the balance.”

Grimes produced a trademark top-class defensive performance in his 200th game, which the Tigers won by 12 points.

He kept dangerous Power veteran Robbie Gray to just one kick, six disposals overall, and no goals on the night, and had eight intercepts, as well as an equal team-high eight one-percenters.
