Jack Ross played a pivotal part in Richmond’s convincing 49-point win against West Coast at Optus Stadium on Saturday night with his strong, all-round performance.

Not only did Ross win plenty of ball himself but, most importantly, he was able to curb the significant influence young Eagle star midfielder Harley Reid was exerting on the contest, when moved on to him for the second half.

Reid had racked up 20 disposals in the first half and was threatening to propel the home team to victory.

Ross, however, restricted Reid to just seven touches for the rest of the match in an extremely impressive, disciplined, run-with performance.

And he finished with 25 disposals, nine contested possessions, six marks, four inside-50s, five clearances, six score involvements, three intercepts, a game-high nine tackles and 233 metres gained.

“It wasn’t too much fun...I didn’t like it,” a self-effacing Ross told Fox Footy in a post-game interview.

“I had a feeling after last week (against Essendon), when I went to (Zach) Merrett for a little bit.

“Harley had an unbelievable first half, so I thought it might be coming.

“He’s obviously a hell of a player. Took me to places on the ground that I hadn’t been, but I like the challenge, I like getting tested.

“I feel like it actually brings me more into the game to be honest...it narrows my focus down.

“I’ve got a clear focus of just trying to beat my man and then try and make them defend when we win the ball.

“I’m still trying to find the balance of it, but I really like the challenge. So, hopefully I’ll keep doing it."

Ross expressed excitement about the journey Richmond is on under coach Adem Yze.

“I love where the Club’s at, I love where we’re going. We’ve got a clear direction and Ooze is really leading the way,” he said.
