Sarah Hosking knows just how hard it is to play football at the elite level.

Even more so, she knows what it takes to stay there.

So, how exactly did she deal with being sidelined for 10 months with yet another hamstring setback?

It's all about the mentality you face the adversity with.

"Spending a lot of time away from the football field, away from training with your teammates, that mentality of playing with freedom, or enjoying being out there (is what I have now)," Hosking said on the Moments That Make Us podcast.

"It's the second time I've done my hamstring tendon, tore it from the bone. It's been a wild journey getting back, I'm just excited to be back playing."

While the start to Richmond's 2025 campaign has been far from ideal, Hosking is refusing to take a backwards step, as the search continues for a maiden win.

"There's no shyness about this. We're obviously not where we want to be right now. None of us expected us to be 0-5. So my mentality at the moment, I'm not taking anything for granted, the fact that I'm even on the football field," she said.

"I had some moments where I really struggled the last couple of years because essentially I'm out (injured).

"I'm now just excited that I get to get out there and play with my teammates and the energy I can bring. I know that's contagious.

"My mindset coming into each game now, I don't take it for granted."

And it takes a powerful person to not only understand their strengths, but play to them for the benefit of the team.

For Hosking, while it now comes easy, she admits it took her time to find her feet at AFLW level.

"We talk a lot about knowing your role and playing your role. The first two or so years of my career, I thought, 'I want to be a really great player', thinking I could be the star midfielder that racks up heaps of disposals," she said.

"Then I hit a certain point and was like, 'that's not my role. What am I actually really good at?' I know that I can bring this relentless pressure, it's something others can't do.

"Growing up with an identical twin, everything we did was a competition, there's always that competitive nature. I remember my dad telling me, on a netball court, 'if you go in harder, you won't be worse off'."

Richmond take on St Kilda at RSEA Park this Sunday from 3.05pm.
