Fresh off a 13-point win over Collingwood, coach Ryan Ferguson praised his side's effort to stick together and build momentum as they approach the end of the season.
Richmond withstood a determined Magpies outfit that made a late surge in the final term, displaying composure and resilience to secure a hard-fought victory last Sunday.
“We are proud of the brand of footy that we are playing, but it wasn’t perfect today,” Ferguson admitted.
“But just to see the brand of footy, how hard we worked and how tough we were and when we were exciting, it was the ability to lower the eyes, have different modes of attack and put pressure on the opposition that way.
“In games, you have to withstand that pressure, and it’s not going to be on your terms the whole time, so I thought that was a good experience.
“I’m proud of the group for standing strong, and it’s not the season that we planned to have but to stick together and work on our game and build momentum, I’m really proud of how they’ve attacked that.”
Ferguson held high praise for first year player Sierra Grieves, who has gone from strength to strength since her debut game against Essendon in Round 3.
“I love a first-year player who just brings energy and enthusiasm and love for the game and the ability to shut time and space down quickly on defence,” he said.
“Also, her smarts, she can just see the ball, see the play and has an awareness.
“It was a better, more even performance, not having to rely on three or four, the whole team was bouncing off each other, and were a bit more connected this week than earlier in the season.”
Richmond now turns its focus to Fremantle as they travel over to Perth for the last away game of the season this Saturday.
Ferguson believes the momentum gained from the Collingwood clash will put his side in good stead to finish the season strongly.
“We want to run through the finish line, and we want to feel like we have run out of time, essentially,” Ferguson said.
“We are still heavily invested in building our game and building momentum, getting better and lifting the floor, but also raising our ceiling.
“I am proud that the group is in that vein of thought, and the group is attacking that, and they are not worried about the rest of the year or what happened yesterday.
“So that is our ambition, and how often can we play our way for 80 minutes and let’s keep growing our game that way and let’s see what comes with that.”
Sarah Hosking was another outstanding contributor in Sunday’s win against the Pies, recording 15 disposals at 80 percent efficiency, and 13 intercepts.
Hosking echoed the sentiment of her coach, in wanting to put a strong stamp on the season by running out and winning the next two games.
“It probably hasn’t been the season that we all hoped for and we would have loved to play finals but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the team is going to put the foot down,” Hosking said.
“We are excited to go over to Perth. We love traveling as well and to take on Freo, I think we are just really excited for the challenge but super excited to get over there.
“Hopefully we take a bit of momentum in across the last few weeks and hopefully the Tiger Army is seeing a little bit more momentum from the team.
“We are starting to gel and putting together more of those performances that we are actually really proud of.”
