Throughout 2026, we will be cranking up the Tigerland time machine and transporting yellow and black barrackers back to 1966 to relive a pivotal year in Richmond’s history.
It was the year that Tommy Hafey launched his outstanding Richmond coaching career.
It was the year the “Kyabram Kid”, four-time premiership hero, and future Club ‘Immortal’ Dick Clay made his debut with the Tigers.
It was the year star ruckman and Team of the Century member Michael Green debuted.
It was the year 1969 premiership full-forward and 1970 club leading goalkicker Eric Moore played his first senior game.
It also was the year that the Tigers recorded their most wins in a season since 1944, when they won 14 games and played off in the Grand Final. In 1966, the team finished with 13 wins and one draw in an 18-game season, missing then then final four by just two points.
It also was the year that proved to be the catalyst for the Club’s drought-breaking premiership in 1967 and the three further flags that followed under Hafey’s astute coaching guidance in 1969, 1973 and 1974.
Over the course of the next six months, we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 1966 season by delving into the archives to reproduce Tiger news items, feature articles, match reviews and much more from that important year in the Club’s history.
We look forward to bringing you plenty of ripping Richmond reminiscing in the Spirit of ’66.
