Throughout 2026, we are cranking up the Tigerland time machine and transporting yellow and black barrackers back to 1966 to relive a pivotal year in Richmond’s history.
Today we take a look at an article in The Age newspaper from this time 60 years ago about the Tigers being locked in a battle with Tasmanian club Clarence, seeking a clearance for talented teenager Royce Hart.
“Richmond will not clear John Chivers back to Clarence (Tasmania) until it gains a clearance from Clarence for centre half-forward Royce Hart.
Chivers joined the Tigers last year but was not quite up to a permanent place in the senior side and managed only one senior game and one as a reserve.
Hart, 17, 6ft 2in, last season won Tasmania’s under-19s best and fairest award.
Richmond secretary Graeme Richmond said Hart had big potential and expected him to develop quickly."
And we have reproduced a second article from The Age which highlighted the impressive pre-season form of a Tiger cub, along with some other pre-season news from Punt Road.
“A 19-year-old footballer who had a brief taste of League football last season is proving one of Richmond’s outstanding recruits this pre-season.
He is last year’s Richmond third 18 captain – 5 ft. 8 in. rover Barry Teague.
Teague came on as a reserve for the senior team in the final game last season and later starred in the match against Fitzroy in Sydney.
He was not included on last year’s senior list but is a certainty this season.
Officials said last night that Teague was likely to make a strong bid for selection in the team for the opening match of the season against Carlton.
Captain Neville Crowe, who has been idle for three weeks with a heel injury, trained solidly last night and pulled up well.
Crowe said he was perfectly happy with the progress made by the injury and is confident that he will throw off the effects completely within the next week.
Defender Mike Hammond and half-back flanker Graham Gahan have stitches inserted in cuts on their hands and were forced to train lightly.
Hammond has five stitches in his hand and Gahan, who was hurt at work on Monday, has two.
Four players – centreman Bill Barrot, rover Peter Hogan, wingman Trevor Gowers and follower Bill Walford – are all suffering from blistered and cut feet.
Barrot and Hogan did not train, Gowers worked out in the gymnasium and Walford had a light run.
They are all expected to resume normal training next Tuesday night.
The other injured player is bulky follower Pat Guinane. He trained last night with his hands taped because of blisters received weight-lifting at Percy Cerutty’s camp at Portsea over the weekend.
Another follower – Mike Patterson – was missing last night because of illness in his family.
Centre half-back Kevin Smith is showing dashing form again and looks set for another good season.
Officials are also pleased with the performances of 19-year-old Lewis Trenker, from Marcellin College, and Albury player Geoff Strang.
Strang, who played three senior games with the Tigers last season and returned to his country club, will stay in Melbourne this season.
Officials feel he could become a regular member of the side on a half-forward flank.”
