Tim Taranto

Tim Taranto took on the Richmond captaincy for the first time in the Round 3 contest against Fremantle at Optus Stadium, and he responded superbly to the extra responsibility that goes with the role.

The dual Jack Dyer Medallist, who is filling in as the Tigers skipper due to the absence of the injured Toby Nankervis, was excellent both through the midfield and when spending some time in the forward line.

He ignited the Tigers charge in the second quarter when they kicked five goals, with two of those coming off his boot.

Taranto finished the match with 24 disposals, a team-high 13 contested possessions, three marks, two goals, five inside-50s, three clearances, four score involvements and 148 metres gained.

Richmond coach Adem Yze explained the decision to use Taranto up forward during his post-game press conference.

“We were doing that a little bit throughout the pre-season. We want Tim to play forward. He’s a very good forward, he’s done it before, and it’ll give opportunity for Sammy Lalor to go inside (midfield) and Seth Campbell,” Yze said.

“We need to expose some of our young players through the middle of the ground, and at the same time we want to have a potent front end.

“Tim played a terrific game as first game as captain for our footy club.”
