Richmond went down to Coburg by 23 points in Round 2 of the VFL, with coach Jack Madgen providing his update on each player.

Josh Gibcus (10 disposals, 3 marks, 8 kicks)
"It was a solid game in defence by Josh. He had a bit to deal with as the ball was coming in pretty fast. I thought he'd made some good decisions in the air, whether to mark or spoil. The more Josh can lead and control the backline at the VFL level, the better it will prepare him for when he has an opportunity at the AFL level again."

Zane Peucker (3 goals, 16 disposals, 3 tackles)
"It was another strong offensive game from Zane. He was able to hit the scoreboard a few times. What I loved most was his ability to win or halve a front-and-centre contest. He even joined in the aerial contest and took a nice little hanger."

Noah Roberts-Thomson (1 goal, 12 disposals, 3 tackles)
"I thought Noah played a solid game. He could have had an outstanding game, but he just let himself down a little bit with his execution. He’s doing all the hard things, getting all the right spots, working his tail off. Now it's just about finishing the play and rewarding himself for all the good work he's doing."

Kane McAuliffe (24 disposals, 4 tackles, 3 marks)
"It was a bit of a challenging game for Kane, in terms of dealing with the emotions of being sick last week and then missing out of the selection this week. He’ll definitely be better for the run. He is an AFL ready player, so it’s important to continue to play above the level when he is in the VFL."

Patrick Retschko (24 disposals, 5 marks, 2 tackles)
"Pat continues to find plenty of the footy at the VFL level. His ability to cover the ground and challenge teams ahead of the ball is impressive. He can continue to work on his decision making, as he is playing some good footy."

Liam Fawcett (1 goal, 8 disposals, 5 marks)
"He continues to bring his aerial power and presence. Fawcett had multiple shots at goal again and bought his aerial power. I'd love to see him start bringing down a few more of his chances in the air. He had a positive impact for us on the day."

Tom Burton (21 disposals, 7 marks, 4 tackles)
"Burto played really well on the weekend. He continues to improve in his role, and his passion to get better is impressive. Every week, he is adding something to his game, and he was one of the players out there that led the way with his pressure and work rate."

Kaleb Smith (27 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 marks)
"I love Kaleb's game when he plays with a defensive mindset. He uses the ball really well, so finding the balance of when to defend and when to attack as a high back is important. He’s showing great leadership at the VFL level for our younger team."

Samson Ryan (14 hit outs, 6 disposals)
"It was Sampson’s first game back from injury for the year. He showed some good glimpses of his best footy. He'll be better for the run, and I loved his leadership on the day."

Oliver Hayes-Brown (10 disposals, 5 clearances)
"Ollie showed some good ruck craft getting on top at centre bounce and he was finding a bit of his own football with a few marks long down the line. He can still work on his physicality to dominate stoppages around the ground and impose himself on the game more."

Liam George

Austin Johnson (9 disposals, 3 tackles, 3 marks, 1 clearance)
"Austin is our 'Mr. Fix-it'. I love when he is involved in the game, and we are a better team for it. We as coaches need to give him the best chance to succeed, because when he's got the ball in his hands, good things happen."

Harry Scott (18 disposals, 6 tackles, 3 marks)
"It was a challenging day for all of our midfielders. I thought Scotty was good with his hands and his ball use. I would love to see him use his size and strength around stoppage more and really lead our boys."

Lachlan Street (19 disposals, 3 marks, 3 tackles)
"Streeta played inside all day. We'd love to see him continue to be a great leader out there for us. We ask a lot of Streeta, but he's a great Richmond man and does whatever role we need him to do."

Mutaz El Nour (17 disposals, 12 kicks, 8 marks)
"Mutaz played a solid game in defence. He intercepts the ball at a high level. I thought he let some uncontrollable things get to him on the weekend. We need him to continue to lead our back line as it will continue to take his game to the next level."

Leo Connolly (19 disposals, 14 kicks, 4 marks)
"It was another good game from Leo. His ball use continues to be a standout, and his ability to find time and space with the footy, to relieve pressure and find the mark out of defence has been a really important."

Tom McKenzie (17 disposals, 5 marks)
"Tom played his first game of the season. He provided some strong contests and ball use down back. He will continue to get better and fit into the system with more games under his belt after an interrupted pre-season."

Olli Hotton (18 disposals, 4 tackles, 5 kicks)
"Olli, along with the other mids, had a tough day. We struggled to stop their ball movement and play a front half game. Olli has some serious weapons in offence that we weren’t able to utilise as much as we would’ve liked."

Ned Renfree

Nick Collier (10 disposals, 5 tackles)
"I thought Nick really led the way with his defensive 'come forward' acts. He always tries his guts out, and we probably needed a few more blokes to play with his intent and effort on the day, and the game might’ve looked more on our terms."

Liam George (18 disposals, 6 marks)
"Playing on a big oval against a team that likes to shift the ball a lot by foot was challenging for our wingers. I thought George tried hard all day, but sometimes was a little overzealous with his attack on the footy, rushing a few opportunities. He is such an important part of our group, and I can't wait to see him bounce back next week."

Sam Toner (10 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 marks)
"Sam was coming off a really strong performance last week. We lacked the ability to deliver the ball in our forward line to him, which he probably let affect the rest of his game. Sam wears his heart on his sleeve, which we love. He loves celebrating with his teammates, so we just need to get a little bit more of that out of him."

Tom Ferguson (3 goals, 11 disposals)
"Ferg kicked three goals and set up a couple more. I thought his game ahead of the football was really strong. He's just a really clean and polished player, which we needed on the weekend. It probably could have had a bit bigger bag of goals if we used the ball better going forward. He seems to always be in the right place at the right time."

Ned Renfree (1 goal, 10 disposals, 2 tackles)
"It was a good learning for him on a bigger deck, having to defend the ground as a forward. We can't fault his effort and intent, and as he plays more games at the level, he'll just become better and better. He kicked his first goal in VFL football from a strong aerial contest."

Zayden Lockwood (8 disposals, 6 marks, 1 hit out)
"Zayden debuted for us on the weekend. He is a product of our NGA Academy. He took some really nice intercept marks behind the ball. We gave him a job on a really talented forward, who is probably going to be one of the hardest players he's going to play against in the VFL level. I'm sure he took a lot out of that. I can't wait to see Zayden continue to get better at the level."
