Tom Lynch has kicked more goals in his first three games with Richmond than any other Tigers recruit from a rival league club for 74 years.

The star key forward has 10 goals on the board after three appearances in the Yellow and Black, which is the most since Sel Murray’s impressive goalkicking feat in 1945.

Murray, who joined Richmond from North Melbourne, booted 14 goals in his opening three games as a Tiger during the ’45 season – four v Melbourne, Round 4, Punt Road Oval, seven v Hawthorn, Round 5, Glenferrie Oval and three v Essendon, Round 6, Punt Road Oval.

He finished with 49 goals in just 12 matches for the Tigers that year, but played only one more game with them (Round 10, 1946) before subsequently returning to North Melbourne.

Lynch followed up consecutive three-goal performances (Round 1 v Carlton and Round 2 v Collingwood) with a four-goal display against Greater Western Sydney at Giants Stadium last Saturday that drew praise from Richmond coach Damien Hardwick in his post-match press conference.

“He’s just going to get better as the season progresses. It’s his third game in nine months,” Hardwick said.

“He kicked four (goals) tonight and probably dropped one (mark) that he would normally take.

“We expect, as his fitness level improves, he’ll start to take those and start to be the dominant player we think he’ll be.”
