Richmond faces a red-hot Melbourne side at the MCG on Sunday afternoon, presenting another exciting opportunity for the Tigers’ young core to impress.

Here are some burning questions that could determine the result of the game.

Who wins the first quarter?

Getting off to a good start is always crucial, but after what Melbourne did to Hawthorn last weekend, it will hold greater importance on Sunday.

The Demons were electric, racing out to a 7.5 (47) to 1.2 (8) lead after the opening term last week, which extended to a 77-point advantage at half-time.

While the scoreboard impact may not have been as stark, Richmond had a very positive start against Carlton, with a goal after the siren giving the Tigers a 5.3 (33) to 2.3 (15) lead at the first break.

“We know what’s coming and that will be what they brought in the first part of the game. They’re in really good form so we have an amazing opportunity against a really good side,” Adem Yze said of the Demons.

A four-quarter performance will be vital to a Richmond win on Sunday, and the first step will be starting the contest with immense energy and focus.

How does Richmond match-up with Max Gawn?

When these two teams squared off on Anzac Day Eve, the Tigers threw a surprise at the Demons, with Noah Balta taking centre ruck contests to combat Max Gawn.

It was a strategy that worked, with Balta increasing his ruck time ever since, becoming an integral part of Richmond’s squad, whether that be in the ruck, up forward or down back.

Gawn is enjoying another sensational campaign, with the eight-time All-Australian maintaining his elite status, as he sits fifth in the AFL Coaches’ Association votes.

With Balta’s athleticism a weapon in the ruck, and captain Toby Nankervis making a bigger influence on games since his return three weeks ago, the Tigers’ ruck pairing will no doubt have a plan to attack Gawn and attempt to control his command on the game.

What impact does Sam Grlj make on return?

After being managed last week, the hard-running Sam Grlj will return for the Tigers on Sunday.

The No. 8 draft pick has enjoyed a strong debut season, establishing himself at half-back but also gaining important experience in the midfield and up forward on occasion.

Grlj was named the Round 7 AFL Rising Star against these Dees, while he also kicked his first goal in Round 16 against Collingwood, the game before he was rested.

The 18-year-old is averaging 15 disposals, 11.1 effective disposals, 8.4 kicks, 2.7 tackles and 259.7 metres gained this season, with his game-breaking speed and dare making him an instant fan favourite.

Now fresh off a break, Grlj is set to attack the backend of the campaign with his renowned energy and enthusiasm, beginning with Sunday’s clash with Melbourne.
