One of the pivotal performers in Richmond’s back-to-back premiership sides of 1973-74, Paul Sproule, has outlined some of the key reasons behind the Tigers’ success during those golden years.

In his Life Membership acceptance speech at the Club’s 2013 Annual General Meeting, Sproule spoke in glowing terms of his time at Tigerland.

“I came from Essendon, which was also a very successful club, but there’s no doubt that the passion and power of Richmond, and their willingness to really win and drive the team, is something that I’ll never forget,” he said.

“So, I think that’s something that those who haven’t experienced it can look forward to . . .

“I should say a couple of things about two people that aren’t with us now – Alan Schwab and Graeme Richmond – who both had a lot to do with getting me to the Club.

“They were strong people, who thought nothing but success for Richmond, and I think their drive in that era certainly played a large part towards the overall success.

“The other person I should recognise is Tom Hafey.

“We all love Tommy, and his great devotion to the game, not only for this club, but football as a whole in the country, is something to be applauded.  So, I do recognise Tommy, for what he’s done, as well.”

Sproule, who had a significant impact in four seasons as a player at Richmond, and later coached the Club in 1985, was thrilled to have Life Membership bestowed upon him by the Tigers.

“I played football for lots of clubs.  I probably played 20 years of senior football, but I’ve never got a life membership at any club, so I’m really honored tonight to hear what the board’s done here,” he said.

“I’m greatly respectful of what’s happened, and I’m delighted to accept this Life Membership of the Club.

“It’s a fantastic club, and one that I’ll always follow.”
