Young Richmond star Monique Conti has continued her strong start to season 2021 with another best-on-ground display (among Tigers players) in the eyes of the coaches.

Conti polled six AFL Coaches Association Champion Player votes, which are voted by each competing AFLW senior coach on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis after every game, on the back of a consistent four-quarter performance against the Magpies.

The energetic midfielder gathered a team-high 25 disposals, including three marks and three rebound 50s.

Conti was well supported by skipper Katie Brennan (one vote), who worked into the game as the Tigers made a late charge at the Magpies.

Brennan picked up 17 disposals playing both deep forward and further up the ground. The 174cm utility also took five marks and laid three tackles.

Senior coach, Ryan Ferguson, said he thought Brennan’s move into the midfield gave the side some “impetus” after half-time.

“It seemed to work for us, but obviously we were coming up against a class midfield and class team,” he added.

“There was a couple of things we tried; to get some influence on the game. We learned a few things today in terms of our team and what we can do in certain situations.”

Ferguson was also pleased with the work of Ellie McKenzie in a forward/mid role and debutant Tessa Lavey.

“Tessa gave us exactly what we hoped for, (she is) still quite raw in football but we knew she was going to give us run, good work rate, energy,” he said.

“She is a high-level athlete, and she has learned a lot over her basketball career obviously.

“I thought she played off instinct and what she knows so far and will continue to build her game.

“She gave us a bit of class there to set up our first goal, her work rate and energy was infectious across the team, I thought she gave us a lot.”
