Damien Hardwick ahead of Richmond's elimination final at the Gabba in 2022.

There was a time when Richmond had an unenviable reputation for ruthlessly disposing of its senior coaches.

From ‘Immortal’, four-time Tiger premiership coach Tommy Hafey’s resignation at the end of the 1976 season, up until Danny Frawley’s appointment in late 1999, the Club made a staggering 11 coaching changes.

The coaches at Tigerland from Hafey through to Frawley were:

• Barry Richardson, 1977-78
• Tony Jewell, 1979-81
• Francis Bourke, 1982-83
• Mike Patterson, 1984
• Paul Sproule, 1985
• Tony Jewell, 1986-87
• Kevin Bartlett, 1988-91
• Allan Jeans, 1992
• John Northey, 1993-95
• Robert Walls, 1996-97
• Jeff Gieschen, 1998-99

It has, however, been a completely different story on the Richmond coaching front since 2000.

In that period of time, the Tigers have had just three coaches – Frawley, Terry Wallace and Damien Hardwick.

An article this week by AFL.com.au reporter Michael Whiting showed that only Geelong (Mark Thompson and Chris Scott) has had fewer coaches throughout the past two-and-a-bit decades.

Here is the number of AFL senior coaches at each club since 2000, excluding caretakers . . .

8 – Carlton, Essendon, St Kilda
6 – Adelaide, North Melbourne
5 – Fremantle, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs
4 – Brisbane
3 – Collingwood, Gold Coast, Greater Western Sydney, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, Richmond, Sydney, West Coast
2 – Geelong
