Dick Clay in action during the 1973 Grand Final.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Richmond’s 1973 premiership, we have been transporting Tiger fans back in time throughout 2023 to relive that glorious Yellow and Black year. After the ’73 season, there was still some interesting news emanating from Punt Road. Here is an article from The Age newspaper by leading football writer Ron Carter about the playing future of Richmond star Dick Clay.

“Full-back Dick Clay may have played his last game with Richmond.

Clay is not exactly on the market, but if the right offer comes along he will take it.

Already he has been sounded out by two interstate clubs.

“I could be back at Richmond next year, but at this stage I’m not sure.

“I want to forget about football for a month or so and then I’ll start thinking about next year.

“I’ve had talks with a couple of clubs, but so far they haven’t come up with any firm offers.

“I have to start thinking about making a move from Richmond soon,” Clay said.

“If I play with Richmond next year I’ll be 30 by the time I move to another club the year after, and once you get to 30 not many people are interested in you as a footballer.”

Clay is likely to be flooded with big offers from interstate.

Representatives from most interstate clubs saw Clay at his best in the Richmond-Subiaco game in the Australian championship series in Adelaide on Monday.

Clay’s great play under pressure saved Richmond from defeat.

Clay has been with the Tigers since 1966, played 168 games, and been in three premiership teams.

Although best known as a wingman or full-back it has been his ability to play in almost any position that has made him so valuable to the Tigers.”
