From April to June 2024, a total of 816 patrol days were conducted in Belum-Temengor Forest Complex (BTFC) with an average of 272 patrol days/month. This monthly average has exceeded our target which is 150 patrol days/month. A total of 3,935 km was patrolled on foot; 5,362 km by motorbike; 1,405 km by car; and 3,667 km by boat.
During this period, one active snare was discovered in a logging concession and a sun bear was trapped. This incident was immediately reported by WWF-Malaysia to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN). As it was already dark, they could only arrive the following morning. WWF-Malaysia’s patrol team remained overnight in the vicinity until PERHILITAN arrived. However, the sun bear had disappeared, and most probably freed itself. The snare was likely set up by local poachers as the technique differed from those typically used by foreign poachers. WWF-Malaysia further combed the area and found no other snares.
