Tom Sims’ match statistics from his AFL debut for Richmond against West Coast in the Round 9 clash at the MCG may have been relatively modest, but the tall teenage forward generated plenty of excitement among Yellow and Black barrackers with signs of his considerable football talent.
The Tigers’ seventh selection (No. 28 overall) in the 2024 AFL national draft finished with six disposals, two marks, one goal, three score involvements, three inside-50s, three tackles and 206 metres gained.
Sims showcased his athleticism, leap and strong hands at times throughout the contest and definitely looked comfortable at the level.
The goal he kicked at the Ponsford Stand end of the ground during the second quarter was a ripper.
He took a big, contested mark and then coolly steered through the set-shot goal, much to the delight of his teammates, family in attendance, and the Tiger Army.
“Lining up, I was sort of like, this is the moment. But I just focused on routine and managed to slot it. Good celebration, too,” he told Richmond Media in a post-game interview.
Sims was delighted to get a win with the Tigers in his debut appearance.
“It was close the whole game, so just wanted to get over the line. Credit to ‘Browny’ (Tom Brown), that chase-down tackle was the sealer,” he said.
“Just seeing everyone in the crowd erupt, it was such a good feeling. Even though I was on the bench, it was just a good time to celebrate.”
