When you rupture your ACL for the second time in your life, most people would call it quits on their sporting dreams.

But for Mykelti Lefau, he's done anything but.

Instead, the Richmond forward has thrown himself into the Club's rebuild, supported teammates and completed rehab, all with a smile on his face.

Now, he's on the brink of a much-anticipated return to football.

He won't tell you his ACL recovery was easy or seamless. But he will tell you that it was made all the better completing rehab with Richmond teammates Judson Clarke, Tylar Young, Josh Gibcus and Taj Hotton, all facing the same fate.

"I honestly hated it for the first couple of minutes off the field after I did, but then I came to the realisation that there's no point being in that mindset," he told SEN Radio on Sunday.

"I already knew that Tylar Young did his the week before. I had a buddy to do that rehab with, together.

"There was five of us all together now (that did ACLs). We've had a great rehab together, we've all pushed through, pushed each other on each challenge. It's been a great rehab, we've all been there for each other.

"That's the biggest thing I've taken out of it, that connection.

"It hasn't been super seamless, but this is my second ACL, so I've had experience before. So it's taking the practice from that. This time I've had a lot more resources, doing it through the AFL system.

"I've been very fortunate in the sense that I haven't had any hiccups along the way. It has been very seamless, but I'm not taking it for granted."

During his rehab, the Club took the ACL boys over to Samoa on an important trip that reconnected Lefau with his roots.

"That was so good for all of us, for our mindset, just taking us away from the rehab. It helped build our connection as well," he said.

"Especially for me, it's my culture and I'd never been to Samoa. So for the Club to be able to take me and some of my best mates over with me was such an awesome experience. I'm hoping we can go again and build on the seed we planted, teaching kids footy.

"It was such a rewarding experience and something I'll remember forever."

As for his broader football journey, Lefau is buying into the rebuild expectations.

"We relate to it as climbing Everest at the moment. We want to take it one step at a time," he said.

Lefau will return to football this weekend, closing a challenging but rewarding recovery chapter and moving back into full-time football.

"I'm happy to say that he just has to get through one more session, and Kelts will be available for selection this week," High Performance Manager Ben Serpell told Richmond Media.

"He will be getting a bit of game time, which is exciting for Mykelti."

Richmond face North Melbourne at the MCG this Sunday.
