The Richmond VFL side secured a brilliant 12-point win against GWS in Sydney last Saturday afternoon. Here’s how coach Jake Batchelor assessed the performance of each player.
Joel Garner (30 disposals, nine clearances, five marks, five tackles)
“Really strong midfield game for us, he played like a bull and led the boys with great physicality and played a really important defensive role through the middle of the ground.”
Judson Clarke (27 disposals, eight marks, two goals)
“Really strong game on the wing, played his role really well and connected up with our defenders and our forwards on the open side and got resulted with two goals, so it was great to see him continue his form.”
Maurice Rioli (25 disposals, eight tackles, five clearances, two goals)
“Probably best on ground in terms of his impact, was a bull around the ball with his effort and intent, and to finish with two goals as a midfielder was great to see.”
Harry Scott (25 disposals, seven clearances, five marks, one goal)
“Continuing to improve and become a really strong VFL performer, his third week in a row as a midfielder now and his power, strength and stoppage craft is on show.”
Jacob Blight (23 disposals, 13 intercept possessions, 11 marks)
“Putting together some really good form at the moment, he is defending really strongly when he has to and intercepting the ball at the right time. He is also making some neat decisions with the ball.”
Tom McKenzie (20 disposals, five clearances, three tackles, two marks)
“Improving as an inside mid, he spends time with the ball and he’s tough. His decisions with ball in hand are becoming a big asset.”
James Trezise (18 disposals, six marks, four tackles, one goal)
“Played three quarters as a half-back, nice to get a goal and his contest work is becoming a real weapon of his.”
Mutaz El Nour (16 disposals, nine intercept possessions, six marks)
“Playing a little bit higher with four key-defenders in the team, so a different role for him but he’s impacting really well in the air and his contest work is extremely consistent at the moment.”
Jasper Alger (15 disposals, six marks, two clearances)
“Playing higher up the ground, started connecting really well with our wingers and I think he’s making the most of his opportunities.”
Samson Ryan (13 disposals, 16 hit-outs, four marks, one goal)
“A solid day, he had a good battle with Nick Madden and got back for us well. It was nice for him to get forward and kick a goal as well.”
Nicholas Collier (13 disposals, six marks, three tackles)
“Doing a lot right, still not seeing the rewards necessarily with the ability to get the ball in his hand, but his contest work is so strong, he fights, he scraps, and he is a great half-back for us.”
Mohammed Yassine (13 disposals, three tackles, one goal)
“A strong game. He only kicked one goal but his chase pressure, ability to stand under the high ball and win contests was really strong. He spent time with the ball which was great.”
Mykelti Lefau (11 disposals, four marks, four tackles)
“Two behinds, could’ve been better if he kicked two goals but he competed really strongly, is composed and once again laid some great chase down tackles that we have come to expect.”
Sean Lai (11 disposals, two marks, one tackle)
“He’s playing some really good football as a winger and our 23rd man, so he’s setting the ground up really well for us on attack, making it big and his defensive decisions are improving.”
Lachlan Wilson (11 disposals, four tackles, three clearances)
“Lower impact this week if you look purely at stats but his ability to play a role for us once again was really strong, and that’s why we love him."
Jacob Bauer (10 disposals, four marks, three goals)
“Had four shots on goal and a couple of marks inside-50. You can see that he’s thinking his way through the game really strongly, so great to see some growth there.”
Oliver Hayes-Brown (10 disposals, 25 hit-outs, three marks, three clearances)
“Solid contest with Nick Madden as well, when he gets the ball in his hands around the contest, he makes smart decisions and takes on the tackle. He had minimal gametime so we will look to ramp that up this week.”
Jacob Koschitzke (10 disposals, five marks, two tackles)
“Played as a high defender this week, found himself on the open side of the ground a fair bit. So not necessarily lots of impact possession wise but he was organised, he was communicating and set the team up well.”
Tylar Young (10 disposals, four marks, one tackle)
“Played a little bit higher this week, his ability to play small is going to be an asset of his and he did that really well. So, if that happens again we will look to find ways that he can use his size and height to punish smaller forwards.”
Noah Balta (10 disposals, three marks, one tackle)
“Had some really good moments where his physicality and his reaction time were really strong, a couple of moments that he could tidy up. But great to have him involved in the team, his communication and leadership was immense.”
Liam George (nine disposals, two marks)
“Seen a rise in his leadership on game day and his instruction, he’ demanding of behaviours and actions, so going really well there.”
Massimo Raso (seven disposals, four tackles, two goals)
“Three shots from seven kicks, getting his front and centre really well. Still finding ways to add an extra layer to his game in the open field, but his intent to defend was strong.”
Liam Fawcett (five disposals, three tackles)
“I think he fought and scrapped throughout the whole game, it wasn’t pretty but sometimes as a key-forward you just have to stand under high balls, you’ve just got to compete and do it again knowing that you aren’t going to kick five goals every game. His intent to compete and play like a really big man was strong."
