Throughout 2025, we are transporting Richmond supporters back 60 years to what was a pivotal season in the Club’s history – 1965. Today, we take a look at a report in The Age newspaper by Greg Hobbs of Tiger team selection issues, following a rare, mid-year intra-club practice match at the MCG, due to the competition’s Round 11 fixture being held over two Saturday's – July 3 and July 10.
Richmond selectors are seriously considering shifting Fred Swift away from full-back for Saturday’s match against South Melbourne at the MCG.
Swift has not played well recently, and there is a strong chance lean, high-marking Neil Busse will displace him at full-back this week.
Officials were delighted with Busse’s full-back display against regular full-forward Mick Erwin in last Saturday’s full-scale practice match at the MCG.
If Swift is moved, he is likely to retain his position in the senior side on a half-back flank at the expense of Tony Jewell.
Mike Patterson, a reserve in the last round, has an excellent chance of regaining his senior ruck berth for the South game.
A ruck position will be left open if Busse is switched to full-back.
Trevor Gowers has recovered from a shoulder injury – in last Saturday’s practice game he got 33 kicks – and is certain to return to the line-up to replace Victorian wingman Bill Brown.
The Tigers also have to find a fresh centreman to replace State representative Bill Barrot.
Tasmanian John Chivers, who joined Richmond this year, may get the position.
Follower Alan Richardson had his top teeth removed yesterday but is likely to be well enough to pass a test on Thursday night.
