Richmond’s VWFL Championship team have given themselves a chance at securing a third consecutive premiership after a close win over Collingwood in the Preliminary Final over the weekend.
With their season on the line, the Championship Tigers responded strongly after their qualifying loss to St Kilda the week prior.
Championship Division Head Coach, Miranda Charlton, said she was impressed by her side's willingness to compete in the contest.
"The Championship Richmond Tigers squad overcame another hard-fought contest against Collingwood this weekend that saw plenty of players putting their bodies on the line and hitting the deck to make it to the Grand Final next Sunday," Charlton said.
"We saw plenty of big performances on court from Teisha Shadwell in the ruck, who was a huge part of call clearance and our lockdown defensive efforts with Judeland Antony and Shannan Sykes, who had an impact off the bench, containing their forwards to 40 points (5 goals, 10 behinds).
"Our kick ins and centre third were expertly controlled by James Weinert, who used excellent ball control to deliver to ball into the forward third to forwards Chris Kotsanas (league leading goalkicker) and Angelo Mavroudis, who launched a clutch goal to seal the result in the final seconds of the game."
Richmond managed to secure victory, outscoring the Pies in the fourth quarter to bring home a seven-point win.
The final score reflected Richmond 6.11 (47) to Collingwood 5.10 (40).
"We’d love to see the Tiger Army support our Championship and Community wheelchair footy teams take on St Kilda and Essendon, respectively, for the Robert Rose Trophy in what is sure to be a great contest next week at State Netball Hockey Centre," Charlton said.
Richmond will face St Kilda in the Grand Final this Sunday from 2:00pm at the State Netball Hockey Centre.
The Community Division will also play their Grand Final match against Essendon from 1:00pm.
