Coach Adem Yze has confirmed Richmond is “going to hit the draft again” this offseason, with two early picks set to inject more young talent into the Swinburne Centre.
Coming off last year’s haul of eight draftees, including seven from the first 28 picks, the Tigers currently possess selections two and three in November’s draft.
Richmond holds its own first round selection, with the other pick coming from a trade struck at last year’s draft, which gave the Tigers the rights to North Melbourne’s 2025 first rounder.
Speaking on SEN on Thursday morning, Yze was steadfast in the Club’s commitment to this year’s draft.
“We’re really clear that we’re going to hit the draft again,” Yze said.
“We’ve got two early draft picks again, and we’re looking for young talent to bring in. For this season, we’ll do that again.
“We might look to free agents and things like that next year and moving forward.
“Last year we brought a lot of young talent in, we’re going to do that again this year and start to think of those things next year.”
Yze added that the plan this year will be to draft players that mesh strongly with the talent injected through last year’s draftees.
“We think we filled a lot of the gaps that we needed. We brought in Harry Armstrong, Jonty Faull and Tom Sims, so we got a lot of height (up forward), and we got a lot of key defenders,” Yze said.
“Our key position stocks are really strong at the moment, we are just really young.
“Obviously, the talent with Sam Lalor, Josh Smillie, Taj Hotton…we feel like we have filled a lot of gaps with our youth.
“We’re looking to bring in some talent through this draft that will complement what we brought in last year. Right now, the gaps are the exposure and experience that we need these players to have and feel on an AFL field.”
The 2025 Telstra AFL Draft will take place across two nights on Wednesday, November 19 and Thursday, November 20.
The Free Agency Period runs from October 3-October 10, with the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period open between October 6-October 15.
