As members of the Sports Environment Alliance (SEA), the Richmond Football Club is proud to celebrate Green Sports Day on Monday, October 6.
SEA is hosting the Green Sports Day, a global event, in Australia for the first time this year. Established in 2016 in the US, Green Sports Day has inspired millions of sports fans and hundreds of organisations worldwide to use the power of sport to protect our planet.
This program brings that energy to our shores, uniting the Australian sporting community to turn passion into action. Together, we can harness the influence of sport to drive actual change, because without a healthy planet, there’s no game to play.
Examples of how Richmond is supporting climate and sustainability include:
Partnership with SisterWorks that repurposes waste materials into handcrafted products
• 124kg Club materials donated
• 242 hours of employment for refugee and migrant women
• $42,504 social return on investment
• Support the partnership by purchasing upcycled products produced by SisterWorks by clicking here.
Punt Road Oval Redevelopment
• 85% construction waste diverted from landfill
• Renewable or green energy, and water saving measures, imbedded across the project
Tiger Conservation with the World Wildlife Fund
• Almost 350 Tiger conservation members signed up
• More than $45,000 raised to employ staff to patrol the Royal Belum state park in Malaysia
The Club is also a member of the Sports Environment Alliance, and signatory to the UN Sport for Climate Action Group
Additionally, the Club has detailed an action plan outlining how Richmond will deliver on its United Nations’ Sports for Climate Action Initiative commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Click here to read more about the plan and click here to read more about Richmond Green.
The mighty MCG will be lit up green to support the Green Sports Day.
