Daryl Cumming, the pacy forward pocket and rover, who played in the most Premierships at Tigerland - seven flags across the Under 19s, Reserves and Seniors, has died. He was 74.

Cumming died February 24th 2026, his wife Glenda told the Club.

He amassed a phenomenal record at Tigerland that will most likely never be surpassed; a member of the U19s premierships of 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, then the Reserves premierships of 1971 and 1973, before striking success with the Seniors in the 1974 flag.

Seven premierships in eight years; and all before he had turned 24 years of age.

(The only blemish – if one could even call it that – of that incredible run was the high scoring 1972 Grand Final loss to Carlton. Cumming kicked two goals that day).

In total he played 216 games at Richmond (88 Seniors, 62 Reserves, 66 Under 19s) and kicked 218 goals (64 Seniors, 68 Reserves, 86 Under 19s).

Wearing No. 1, he was recruited from the Club’s country zone South Mildura, on April 7th 1967, and spent the majority of his Senior career in the forward pocket and as a second rover to Kevin Bartlett.

As a 16-year-old he was rover and kicked a goal in the Under 19s 1967 flag, then the following year he kicked a goal as wingman in the 1968 triumph.

In 1969 he captained the U19s to the premiership over Hawthorn, and booted three goals in the 1970 flag as rover.

His senior debut was against Essendon at Waverley Park in Round 9, 1971, where he came on to replace Bruce Tschirpig in the last quarter, and scored a goal with his first and only kick that day.

In the 1974 senior premiership, Cumming had 18 disposals, booted a 55-metre goal, and set up three others – a handball to David Cloke, a handball to Barry Richardson, and paddling the ball out to Kevin Sheedy, who all scored.

Off-field he worked at a Bridge Road menswear store and, possessing great pace, entered several running events including the Echuca Gift, Frankston Gift, Bendigo Two Thousand, and the Tarax Handicap at Toorak Park.

Incredibly he played for four different clubs in four years – Richmond (1971-76), 10 games for Melbourne (1977) under Bob Skilton, one game under Ron Barassi at North Melbourne (1978), and 10 games for South Melbourne under Ian Stewart in 1979.

After his League career he was captain/coach of Wentworth from 1980-1982, and played for Mildura in 1983.

In 2018 he was awarded Richmond Life Membership after the Club’s board passed an amendment to their constitution recognising all Tiger premiership players with the accolade.

His last public appearance for the Club was at the 50th anniversary reunion of the 1974 premiership where he was photographed, front and centre, holding the premiership cup.
