Richmond recorded a solid victory over the Australian U18 Academy side in Saturday's practice match at IKON Park.
Coach Jack Madgen has provided an overview of how every player performed in the win below.
Luke Trainor
"Unfortunately, Luke got hurt early in the game, so wasn't involved. Nonetheless, I've been really impressed with Luke's attitude in the locker room and during the week when he's playing VFL."
Zane Peucker
"Zane suffered a syndesmosis injury early in the game. He's been in some great form, so it's a bit of adversity for him. I'm looking forward to see how he responds to it. I'm sure he'll come back bigger and better."
Noah Roberts-Thomson
"I am really liking the way Noah is playing his footy. He is team first. He's running his forward patterns well. He's added something to his game every week. It's a bit of a matter of executing in front of goal for Noah to really reward himself for all the grunt work he's doing up the ground."
Tom Brown
"Browny played a half for us before he was carry over for the AFL. His football IQ and ball use is above-the-level. It was good to see him bring those strengths on Saturday. I liked his leadership and his intent to defend behind the football, capped off with a nice little hanger in the second quarter."
James Trezise
"James played a mixture of wing and half-back. His defensive craft and system is really strong. His vision when he had the football was exceptional and provided us plenty of bounce off half-back. His decision making was sound. When James is clean with the ball, his game goes to another level."
Oliver Hayes-Brown
"Hayes-Brown had a good challenge against some pretty highly-touted and talented rucks, so it was great to see him jumping at centre bounce. As the game went on, he just kept getting better and better, and his cleanliness by hand is really standing out for his size. Must be the basketball background."
Mohammed Yassine
"It was Moey's first game in the VFL this season and he was able to get on the end of a couple goals late in the game. He used his speed well. He even had a couple of good aerial moments just to halve the contest, which is really important."
Harry Scott
"I thought Scotty had some exceptional body work at stoppage and was clean by hand. I feel like Harry plays his best footy when he's proactive and uses his size and strength as a midfielder. He did this on Saturday, which contributed to him playing a really good game. We still have a bit to work on in terms of team defence as a midfield group."
Leo Connolly
"Leo played off half-back. We never have to question Leo's ability with ball in-hand. We would love to keep seeing Leo tip into the defensive side of his game, and become a leader down there. I can see him trying to lead and communicate, and I still feel like there's another level to go."
Zaydyn Lockwood
"The key backs had their hands full with some talented young key forwards, so they had some tough decisions to make on the last line of defence. Hopefully it was a good learning for Zaydyn. His athleticism and agility is exceptional for his size and position. His challenge at the moment is his decisions in the air, which will come with more time at the level."
Olli Hotton
"I thought Olli's ability to get out the front of stoppage and drive his legs was really good. He had some great moments in offence. I just keep challenging Olli to work on the defensive aspect of his game. He gets in good spots in defence, but then the ability to stay locked in and on his toes will help us play a front half game."
Sam Cumming
"Sammy was exceptional on the weekend. He finished off a really nice team goal. His contest, his ability to get the ball from inside to out and his fast feet around stoppages really stand out when you watch him. He took home the medal voted on by our coaches."
Ry Cantwell
"It was Ry's first game back at the level for a couple of years. He played off half-back and displayed his speed and power, got plenty of the footy in a pretty fast, free flowing game. But again, we would challenge Ry to keep scanning and thinking 'what's next,’ as a high defender."
Tom Burton
"I love watching Burto play. He just keeps working on his craft, and he's really diligent. If you tell him to do something, he will try his best to do it to the highest standard he can. He put his body on the line a few times for the team. He could've easily finished with more than one goal, but I thought he played the right way and is in good form."
Sam Toner
"Sam is in great form and played an exceptional game. He had six shots on goal and squared a couple up. I feel like Sam plays his best football when he leads our trademark edits. It's amazing how many times off the back of celebrating and competing, he ends up with a goal. I am really looking forward to seeing him stay in that space."
Liam George
"George played a solid game on the wing. His patterns and his intent to be a good teammate is always really, really strong. Sometimes the last 10 per cent lets George down with his ball use, but you can never question his desire to win and be a team player. We want him to just keep working on that final piece of execution, because he's very well liked and respected within the program."
Josh Pollocks
"Josh played his first game back in Richmond colours after coming back from knee surgery. He played forward and a little bit down back. I thought he presented well. I love his versatility, and I think he'll thrive as the team uses the ball a bit better going forward."
James Milner
"James played forward and midfield. I loved James' tackle pressure and his intent to play system. He’s got a bit to learn as a young inside midfielder, but I can definitely see his upside and how he will grow."
Reuben Hanson
"Hanson played key defender, which was a tough role on the day, with the way the ball was moving up and down the ground. I thought Reuben tried to play the right way. He was in some big contests and he halved some that he probably had no business halving. I am loving what I'm seeing out of the him in the last couple of weeks."
Caleb Nancarrow
"Caleb had to play out of position with the opposition having big key forwards. I thought Caleb was trying to play the system. He is a good rebound defender, but probably didn't get a chance to show those skills and traits as much as we would have liked. We'll continue to develop him and help him play some good football."
Aaron Sharkie
"I thought Sharkie used the ball really well and made some pretty good decisions, especially in the second half with the ball. He is able to roll onto his left and right foot, which is very handy as a high defender. As a young player, especially in a game like that, his ability to have some composure in the back half when everything else is frantic was impressive. Sharkie’s challenge is what he is doing when the ball isn’t in his hands."
Sam Phillips
"Sam played the wing role well, and had some great come-forward moments on defence. The game probably wasn't conducive for a structure-side winger, but I thought he had his moments, and when it was his opportunity to execute, he did pretty well."
Daniel Lowther
"Dan took a real step forward in his development on the weekend. His aerial power was impressive, and his ability to finish his chances in front of goal was a stand out. It is pleasing to see what he has worked on at training and during the week, shine through on game day. If Dan continues to tip into the fundamentals of the game, I am excited to see where he ends up."
Tom Ferguson
"Ferg had some great moments and some tough ones. I liked his ability to move onto the next moment after things weren’t going his way, which resulted in a few front-half turnovers. I don't think we saw Ferg’s strengths as much as we have in previous games, but he was still able to impact the game in other ways which was pleasing."
