Throughout 2026, we are cranking up the Tigerland time machine and transporting yellow and black barrackers back to 1966 to relive a pivotal year in Richmond’s history.
Today we take a look at a preview of the Tigers’ prospects for the ’66 season by leading football writer Brian Hansen in The Truth newspaper.
“Richmond have been ballyhooed into the 1966 League hot seat.
They must make the finals this year or become the laughing stock of the VFL.
And no coach has ever been given a tougher assignment than Tom Hafey. This season makes or breaks him.
So much promotion and publicity has been given to the Tigers that they must make the grade or suffer humiliation.
There isn’t the slightest doubt in my mind that they will make the finals.
This is a power-packed side, loaded with skilled players, strength and a sufficient blending of experience to steady them in any crisis.
Tom Hafey might be living dangerously but no coach has ever been handed such a gifted combination. And after watching him with his players I’m convinced he is the man for the job.
The experience of last year will put the final polish on such players as Davenport, Northey, Bartlett, Gowers, Dickeson, Kevin Smith, Warner, Hogan and Strang.
They are going to have talented players contesting every position. It’s reasonable to predict them to make the finals with their Reserves team.
The rucks will be the launching pad for the side.
Nev Crowe is in top form already and Bull Richardson will be an even more amazing player than he was last year.
He’s stripped a stone in weight, his reflexes and handball are even sharper than last season. He could prove to be the outstanding ruck-rover of the League.
THE DRAW: They open with the big test – Carlton at Carlton. Overcome that hurdle and they can start the season with a rush of three wins.
Then the acid test comes against Collingwood and Geelong away from home. Their fate should be decided in the opening six matches. If they can win three it should be plain sailing to the four.
In the run home they play all their dangerous opponents, except South, on the MCG.”
