Richmond went down to Casey by 27 points in the VFL on Saturday afternoon, in windy Casey Fields conditions.
Coach Jack Madgen has provided an overview of how every player performed in the Round 5 clash.
Luke Trainor (28 disposals, 11 marks, 3 tackles, 1 goal)
"Trainor was good in the contest and at his best, taking the game on. He was making really strong decisions with the ball in hand. I think his next growth step is being really solid in defence, without taking away his ability to win the ball. He must back himself to make those decisions."
Noah Roberts-Thomson (9 disposals, 1 goal, 4 marks)
"NRT had a bit of a different role this week with Tom Burton playing AFL, and I thought he executed it well. He’s still getting multiple shots on goal a week. His aerial was really impressive for a small forward. We still need a bit more frontline pressure in the forward line. I think we can emphasise that to Noah over the next couple of weeks because he's got it in his game. We just need to put him in spots to use it."
Liam Fawcett (8 disposals, 5 marks, 2 clearances)
"Fawcett got his hands on the footy in a lot of aerial contests, probably one of those games where you look back on, and you probably should have kicked three goals. It was pretty tough conditions for a forward, but I’d still expect him to take some of his chances. He had a high-quality defender on him on the day...it was a good chance to keep practising his craft."
Tyler Sonsie (31 disposals, 4 marks, 4 clearances, 2 tackles)
"I thought Sonsie came to the game with a great attitude after coming down to the VFL. His ball use, for the most part, was exceptional, and his ability to find time and space and distribute the ball on time, and on-target, was a standout."
Oliver Hayes-Brown (27 disposals, 19 hitouts, 8 clearances)
"Hayes-Brown, again, was really dominating the ruck with double-figure first-possessions and eight clearances. He is starting to take a few marks ahead and behind the footy as well, which I love seeing him add to his game. The next step for Ollie is just that little bit of polish when he gets the footy, and continue to distribute really sharp and clean hands to our mids. The next step is being able to finish in front of the big sticks as a ruck."
Joel Garner (16 disposals, 8 marks, 1 tackle)
"Garner played a bit of a different role this week at half-back. I thought he was one of our best players. He took a lot of contested marks and used the ball really well. I feel like he was a real calming presence for our young backline. I was really happy with Joel's game and his ability to lead."
Harry Scott (23 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 clearances)
"I thought Scott was good at getting the ball from inside the contest to our runners. A challenge for all of our midfielders is to really value that running. I feel like, as a midfield group, we were hoping we'd win the ball a little bit and tried to get out in transition a little bit too early, which ultimately hurt us. But I thought Scotty in the contest was really good."
Lachlan Street (18 disposals, 3 marks, 2 clearances)
"Street played in the midfield, and his contest work was solid. He provided us with link-play to transition the ball. We challenged Street and our midfield group to work for a little bit longer in the contest, until we've definitely won the footy, before we start thinking of our attack."
Mutaz El Nour (20 disposals, 10 marks, 2 tackles)
"There were tough conditions for key position players to read the flight of the footy on the weekend, but I thought Mutaz did that pretty well. His weapon is his intercept game and contest. We had our hands full with some pretty handy forwards for Casey, but Mutaz competed hard. I believe he is the best VFL defender in the league, and he proved that again on the weekend."
Leo Connolly (23 disposals, 8 marks, 1 clearance)
"Leo played on the wing and half-back. He is a lovely ball user, so we want it in his hands. There's a few learnings from his wing role on the weekend. But I thought he was solid. The challenge for Leo is to keep building his tank and get back to that elite fitness that we know he has."
Tom McKenzie (10 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles)
"Tom played half-back, and I thought he was good in the contest. He is working on staying attached in team defence. He can get a little bit man-focused, so we will just keep educating him in that aspect."
Olli Hotton (19 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles)
"Olli played inside midfield with a little bit of time half-forward. His leg drive around the contest is really good. Olli just needs to stay in the contest for a little bit longer, and again, like the rest of our midfielders, make sure we're valuing that two-way running."
Nick Collier (20 disposals, 9 marks, 1 clearance)
"I've been really loving coaching Nick, and I'm liking his game. He had some really standout plays, driving his legs in offence. You know you'll get 100 per cent effort. The reason why we put him in the midfield in the last quarter was to help build fitness and physicality."
Daniel Lowther (14 disposals, 12 hitouts, 3 marks, 1 clearance)
"Daniel had a couple of good looks, but just couldn't convert. Adding the windy conditions down at Casey, we didn't judge the ball flight well enough in the air, and we suffered for it. I thought when Dan went into the ruck, he competed really well. The challenge for him, as a young key position player, is just to keep building his tank."
Liam George (13 disposals, 3 marks)
"Casey's wingers challenged us with their hard running both ways. We need to help George and prepare him as best as we can, so it's not a surprise for him going into the game. But in typical George fashion, he was a great teammate. He tried hard and continues to play team first."
Josh Gibcus (7 disposals, 3 marks, 1 clearance)
"Gibbo's intent to defend first was really good throughout the day." Click here to read more on Gibcus' injury status.
Sam Toner (11 disposals, 5 marks, 2 hitouts, 2 clearances)
"Toner, like the other key forwards, left a bit out there. He had five shots on goal, but was unable to kick a major. He's finding the footy and getting to some really good spots. We need a little bit more of that from Toner and the team. He would have been a bit flat with himself after the game, but he shouldn't dwell on that one too long, because he's in some really good form."
Sam Philp (21 disposals, 2 goals, 4 marks)
"Philp played half-forward for most of the day and was strong. He also kicked two goals. His ability to get up the ground and link back up, going into attack, was really good. My challenge for Philp is just keep doing the simple things well."
Sam Phillips (7 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 clearance)
"We probably lost that wing battle on the day. They threw some stuff at as that we didn't handle very well. Phillips tried to play the right way, and his intent was there. I think he had one or two shots at goal as well, just again, like the rest of us, couldn't convert. A little bit to learn in terms of staying attached in team defence."
Tom Ferguson (10 disposals, 1 goal, 3 marks, 1 clearance)
"It was a bit of a battle out there for Ferguson. We didn't have the usual contest ahead of the football with the weather conditions. He's been great at hitting front and centre and being involved in plays up and down the ground. The challenge for Ferg is to keep forward line pressure on the opposition, because we're lacking that as a group at the moment."
Mohammed Yassine (8 disposals, 2 goals, 1 tackle)
"It was Moey's first game for the year for us, and I thought he brought his strengths. He is so quick and played his role pretty well, but still has a few things to work on. He was able to kick straight, hitting the scoreboard with two goals and had his hand in a few others as well. We are happy with Moey's first game back, but need some more front-half pressure."
Aaron Sharkie (18 disposals, 5 tackles, 2 marks, 1 clearance)
"Sharkie played his first game for Richmond on the weekend. He was really calm out there. He was clean, which is sometimes a battle in your first game. I thought he made some really good decisions, and the right plays at the right time, with the ball. We encourage him to work more defence into his game."
Ned Renfree (8 disposals, 2 marks, 1 clearance)
"Challenging day for Ned and the forwards as a whole. He is improving every game and has showed glimpses of his ceiling. I love it when he pressures in the front half and backs himself in the air. We rely on him to provide that for us to be our best."
