Kye Annand

Richmond captain Toby Nankervis believes the rapid growth of mid-season draftee Kye Annand is offering the Tiger Army a glimpse into the Club's bright future.

Nankervis, who has played all three games since his return from injury against North Melbourne in Round 15, has lauded the impact of Annand, with another key defender in Ben Miller, who both have shown glimpses of growth in 2026.

"He's [Annand] been awesome. He's slotted right in. He is such a good role player and such a good teammate," Nankervis said.

"Alongside Ben Miller, those two blokes will be a bloody good match up for a long time to come."

And while the results haven't quite gone the way of Richmond just yet, Nankervis has seen improvement across the group, with learnings being turned into action on game day.

"We started really well, which was a focus for us, and we trained really well throughout the week. But in the second quarter, we dropped off a bit. We know they're [Carlton] a really good contested team, so I'm proud of the way we fought in that area," he said.

"There's a little bit of execution stuff we can tidy up and keep putting in the work during the week. I'm sure we'll get the results soon.

"To give ourselves a chance in the end was really pleasing, but it was disappointing that we were not quite good enough.

"We didn't play well enough for long enough earlier in the game. We had a swing there in the last minute or so, that's pleasing."

On a personal note, the ruckman has been feeling strong since his return, all the while supporting his young midfield group and leading them when times get tough during the game.

"I'm really good, starting to get some match fitness back. It's so good to be back out there with the boys, they're such a good group and I've loved being out there, having fun with these blokes," Nankervis said.

The Tigers will have to bounce back quickly, with the lively Demons their next challenge on Sunday at the MCG.

"We'll review this, take the positives, fix up a few things," Nankervis said.

"They're a great side, Melbourne, who are playing some good footy. I can't wait to get back out here and have another go."

Richmond takes on Melbourne this Sunday at the MCG, from 3.15pm (AEST).
