Zane Peucker

On a cold, wet day at the MCG for Richmond’s Round 18 match against Melbourne, talented Tiger teenager Zane Peucker warmed the hearts of yellow and black barrackers with his promising senior debut.

The small forward from SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens, taken by the Tigers with their third pick (No. 31 overall) in the 2025 AFL draft, joined that elite group of players to score a goal with their first kick in League football.

Peucker’s eye-catching, running goal early in the opening quarter was greeted with raucous delight by the Tiger Army and his large contingent of family and friends in attendance.

Although his statistical numbers for the match were fairly modest – seven disposals, three marks, that goal and 233 metres gained – he definitely showed encouraging signs for the future.

Richmond coach Adem Yze liked what he saw from Peucker in his first appearance at the game’s highest level.

“He’s a pure footballer,” Yze said in his post-match press conference.

“He would have been cooked by the end of the game. We tried to manage his minutes a little bit with the speed of the game, and he hasn’t played on big grounds like this. VFL footy you’re playing on smaller grounds.

“But he slotted in nicely. He looked like he belonged straight away. He’ll be better for the run.

“It was really exciting to see him run around today and his family beforehand. Those little wins we’re having with exposure to those young lads is really important, and we need to celebrate.”

Veteran Tiger star defender Nick Vlastuin told Richmond Media in a post-match interview that he rates Peucker highly.

“He probably was going to get a game earlier in the year and then he had the syndesmosis (injury). We were all kind of waiting for him to get one,” Vlastuin said.

“He’s a little goal-sneak. You play on him at training and he always manages to get a goal or two.”

Interestingly, Peucker became the fifth player recruited by Richmond from South Australia to goal with their first kick in AFL/VFL football.

The four others were:

  • Richard Lounder (from Central District) v North Melbourne, Round 5, 1989, MCG.
  • Ben Moore (Glenelg) v St Kilda, Round 11, 1996 v St Kilda, MCG.
  • Aaron Fiora (Port Adelaide) v Carlton, Round 7, 2000, MCG.
  • Noah Roberts-Thomson (Sturt) v St Kilda, Round 10, 2026, Marvel Stadium.
