Finishing off the VFL season in style was top of the agenda, and Richmond did just that against St Kilda in Round 21, taking home a 48-point win.
Hear from coach Jack Madgen, who has provided an overview of each player's performance in the Round 21 victory.
Samson Ryan (4 goals, 15 disposals, 11 hit outs, 6 marks)
“It was the best game I’ve seen Samson play. Not only did he kick four goals, but he also was amazing in the air and saved us four goals. His ball use was exceptional, including a set shot snap, which is awesome from a ruckman. I’m proud of his game.”
Campbell Gray (14 disposals, 7 marks, 3 tackles)
“He looked above the level and took three intercept marks and put on some spoils. I thought he was really good, played to his strengths and was a noble teammate.”
Liam Fawcett (2 goals, 11 disposals, 7 marks)
“He had a few shots on goal and got up the ground well. He moved well and showed off his confidence staying as a permanent forward.”
Oliver Hayes-Brown (1 goal, 14 hit outs, 6 clearances)
“I thought he rucked well and his stoppage work is always elite. He took contested marks and was strong clearing the ball. He also kicked a goal. It’s so awesome when he can also impact the scoreboard like that.”
James Trezise (22 disposals, 6 marks, 3 tackles)
“Played his role well and had some good moments. He was strong in the air and used the ball well. He took the game on and drove through his legs. The way he moves out there is above the level.”
Noah Roberts-Thomson (19 disposals, 6 marks)
“He did a lot right and got some midfield time. He had a solid game and will take some learnings from this year into next. He was sharp in the contest and helped set up goals.”
Tyler Sonsie (22 disposals, 3 clearances, 1 tackle)
“I liked his game and craft with ball in hand. He had 10 contested possessions, and his stoppage work was good. I loved his attitude and intent.”
Tom Burton (18 disposals, 5 marks)
“His running capacity was impressive again. He gets to spots and contests to create numbers. He would be a nightmare to defend. I thought he played well and got our offence going with his run-and-carry.”
Kane McAuliffe (28 disposals, 9 clearances, 5 tackles)
“We saw his strengths on the day. His contested work was elite, with nine clearances and 10 contested possessions. He threw his weight around in stoppage and stamped his authority.
Maurice Rioli (1 goal, 12 disposals, 7 tackles)
“He took a great mark and kicked a goal, but it was his pressure that impressed me most. Laying six tackles and led our team by closing time and space on the opposition. He was elite. I’d be scared if I was on the other team and Maurice was coming my way."
Jasper Alger (3 goals, 9 disposals, 2 clearances)
“It was a really admirable game by Jasper. He kicked three goals and brought everything he could to ground, while also not getting out marked. He lived in the contested and had a great game.”
Zane Peucker (1 goal, 20 disposals, 6 marks)
“He spent time in the forward line and in the midfield. He kicked a nice goal and took some great grabs. He got plenty of the ball, and we look forward to seeing improvement in the way he uses the ball in the future.”
Nick Collier (1 goal, 16 disposals, 6 marks)
“He got on the end of a goal, which was nice and a reward for his efforts this season. He is hard to play against. Even when we were up by 40 points in the dying stages, he’s still diving across his opposition’s boot to stop a goal. I’ve loved coaching this bloke in my first year.”
Mutaz El Nour (18 disposals, 7 marks, 1 tackle)
“Another exceptional game with three contested marks. He played well alongside Campbell Gray, who gave him confidence. His ball use was good. He was solid as he has been all year.
Zach O’Keefe (26 disposals, 12 marks, 3 tackles, 2 clearances)
“He was best on ground alongside Samson, with 26 touches, nine intercept possessions and played well on the wing. We’re excited to see what he can do in the future.
Lachlan Street (22 disposals, 7 marks, 4 tackles)
“He helped our ball movement and looked calm and composed with ball in hand. He played up the tempo which was important. It was a solid game from our skipper and didn’t do much wrong.”
Joel Garner (14 disposals, 3 marks, 1 tackle)
“Played down back and led the game with nine intercept possessions. His contested marking was solid in defence. You could see a good balance between his composure and going hard at the ball. I liked his game.”
Tanner Armstrong (18 disposals, 6 marks)
“It was his first VFL game. I thought he showed some great signs. His ability to find and use the footy off the half back line was awesome. He looked comfortable at the level, despite playing on some solid small forwards. Hopefully he took a lot out of the experience.”
Harry Scott (17 disposals, 7 kicks)
“I thought his ability to play tall and small was good at half back. He looks comfortable back there, and in the midfield. We want to see him thrive in his defensive positioning when the ball isn’t in his area. I like him at half back.”
Liam George (15 disposals, 3 clearances, 2 marks)
“He was clean and stuck up for his teammates all day. He is such a good leader and teammate, who makes blokes stand taller. He used the ball well in offence as well.”
Olli Hotton (13 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 marks)
“He played as a high forward and was unselfish. He brought his leg drive and pressure, which was awesome.”
Sam Philp (12 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle)
“He played a shutdown role in the second half on Liam Henry, who had 23 touches at half-time. Philp kept him to just 10 in the second half. It went a long way to us winning. I’m proud of him for playing the role for the team.”
Sam Toner (9 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles)
“He set up some awesome goals with his ball use and dare to take the game on. He moved the ball well and used the corridor to our advantage. It was low possession but high impact, bringing others into the game.”
